Cold Creek Nevada
Cold Creek Nevada Overview
Cold Creek was a post office town in White Pine County, Nevada.
I have found references that it was also known as Gold Creek (a few references in newspapers, probably a typo), Simonsen, and Strawberry.

Cold Creek Nevada History
Resources state that Cold Creek was established in 1879 but I have found newspaper articles as early as 1870 for Cold Creek and Cold Creek Station in White Pine County. At this time, I need to spend time determining the actual year the town was established.
Timeline
- 1879 – The town was established as Cold Creek
- April 7, 1879 – The Cold Creek post office opened
- December 30, 1882 – Miss Mattie Lewis has gone to Cold Creek to open the school at that place. [The White Pine News – Saturday, December 30, 1882 – Page 3]
- March 28, 1913 – The Cold Creek post office was renamed Simonsen
- 1913 – Name changed to Simonsen
- May 15, 1936 – The Simonsen post office closed and possibly renamed or absorbed into the town of Strawberry

Post Office
The post office in Cold Creek, Nevada was open from April 7, 1879, to March 28, 1913, when it became known as Simonsen which was open from March 28, 1913, to May 15, 1936 (when it became known as Strawberry). The dates for Strawberry activity don’t match the dates for Simonsen so we are leaving it separate for now until we figure out if the town was “absorbed” into the existing town of Strawberry.
The newspaper clipping below mentions Arthur Simons as the postmaster but a quick family history search shows only one Arthur living in the county and he was born in 1832! N\
Nicholas was the father of Ella and Ernest.
Below are the postmasters that we are aware of.
- Nicholas Simonson 7 Apr 1879 Cold Creek
- Ella M Simenson March 24, 1901 Cold Creek
- Ella M Simonsen May 24, 1901 Cold Creek
- Ernest H Simonsen January 8, 1909 Cold Creek
- Ernest H Simonsen March 28, 1913 Cold Creek
- Ernest H Simonsen March 28, 1913 Simonsen

Speaking of mobile apps, two of my favorite mobile apps for exploring the southwest are two different mapping apps one that builds your schedule and the other helps me look to see if my rural destination is taking me to private or public lands. Highly recommend both!

“Cold Creek is one of the many long-lived Newark Valley ranches. The ranch was established in the mid-1870s, and on April 7, 1879, a post office was bestowed upon it. Nicholas Simonsen served as postmaster, and Cold Creek became the mail distribution point for the valley’s ranches. In the early 1900s, during the mining boom in nearby Joy, Cold Creek was known as Cupperville. A school was active at Cold Creek for many years. On March 28, 1913, the post office was renamed Simonsen. The office closed on May 15, 1936. Cold Creek continues to be an active ranch. Several of the original buildings remain.”
