Jane’s BEGINNERS Rock-Scrambling skill acquisition – demonstration and practice

SKILL ACQUISITION AND IMPROVEMENT. It’s for beginners, but it’s not easy, you are learning to climb rocks without a rope to catch you if you slip. Group size 8.

Please be open to learning, even if you have some experience in rock scrambling. I demonstrate and explain what to do and why for safety in climbing. Bracing, leverage, evaluation of rock for climbing, how to prepare yourself to go scrambling in the heat of Las Vegas, what gear to carry and helpful tips for safety.

Come early so you can get a parking place and be ready to go.

Please, you MUST READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION INCLUDING THE WAIVER AND ANSWER THE QUESTION AT THE END. Scroll down to the question after you finish reading the waiver. Thanks.

If you have not done rock scrambling – climbing the rocks without ropes – before, this event is designed to acquaint participants with the basics to be safe and have fun. We will do some friction climbing, (chimney climbing), up/down a steeply-sloped rock face, moving along a narrow ledge, and general terrain evaluation and movement up/down and over the rock. We will be doing the techniques without getting more than a few inches to a few feet above the ground level and it’s within sight of the parking area or trail.

A backpack is necessary, your hands must be free for climbing. I have some loaners. Bring water.

Distance, under 2 miles. It’s near the trail, and total elevation gain is rarely over 150 vertical feet.

NO KIDS OR DOGS Or GUESTS it’s free to join

Bathrooms: only pit toilets at the picnic area, after that, rocks and shrubs.

Bring water to be out ABOUT 3 hours. Flexible clothes, you’re climbing using hands, feet, body, and if you want, gloves to protect your hands.

If you have shoes you plan to wear on scrambles/hikes, please wear them. If your shoes don’t grip on the test rock, up and down, you won’t be safe on scrambles of 3+ scrambling level.

Approach shoes are best for climbing on the rock, but flexible closed shoes that have a grippy sole (sneakers) are adequate for this type of climbing up to a level 3 scramble.

We will meet at Calico basin, RED SPRINGS PICNIC AREA, off West Charleston, the entrance to Calico is about a mile before the entrance to the conservation area, watch for the brown signs. There is only the one picnic area in Calico Basin, it’s small.

I’ll be at the picnic tables about 5-10 minutes before the start. Phone service doesn’t work in the area, please be on time.

A donation to support meetup is appreciated, though not required.
