**This is a rock scramble, not a trail hike. Sticky-soled boots required. No trail shoes. See below for Experience**

You must indicate that you have read the entire hike description by responding to the question asked when signing up for the hike.

Sign up is through the wait list.

Helmets are always welcome. Be sure to use one that doesn’t block your sight.

Always carry “in case of emergency” numbers with you.

On this route, we’ll go to the top of Red Springs then descend to meander around the mid-point on the West Side of the peak. We’ll scramble along some sections of traditional routes and maybe transition in areas that we don’t normally visit. While there may be the possibility of some Class III options for those who want them this is mostly a fun, social scramble. This route is not a good choice for a first scramble.

The view from the top of this rock is amazing. There’s a pretty good view of the entire Calico Basin and the surrounding rocks as well as a look into the city to remind you that you’re not very far away. You can also see over the 13-mile loop into the signature part of Red Rock Canyon. This route is similar to the Grand Staircase in elevation gain but might require a bit more technique in some spots.

We have seen a lot of animals along the area the route covers this year. There is likely at least one hawk’s nest, based on the pair we’ve seen circling and owls have become common. Quail and chuckwallas are typical this time of year and if we’re lucky, the ring-tailed cat will be out to play.

Although advanced techniques are not needed, this route has a few significant ascents so your cardio system will be working hard.

No dogs, no kids, no hiking poles.

Everyone on the “going list” must be members of VegasHikers. It only takes a couple of minutes to create a profile and it’s FREE.

Do not expect cellphone reception in the Calico Basin Area.

We’ll meet at the Red Springs Picnic Area in Calico Basin. To get there: West on Charleston towards Red Rock and make a right turn onto the well-marked Calico Basin turnoff. It’s 2 miles BEFORE the Park entrance. Follow the road down to the Red Springs Picnic Area.
