Skills Practice in Advanced Rope Techniques
October 9, 2021 @ 7:00 am - 10:00 am UTC-7
Please note, our articles may contain referral or affiliate links.
This outing is most appropriate for canyoneers, rock climbers, and mountaineers who need to hone their skills in ascending a rope, passing a knot on descent, transitioning from ascent to descent and vice versa, and using a contingency belay system. We’ll be practicing on an easy wall that is steep but not vertical. This is the first of a 3 stage progression (2nd session on Existential Wall, 3rd session running Secret Canyon at Lake Mead.)
These are not easy techniques to master and there are many different ways to set them up. I’ll be happy to share my practical approach but this is a good forum to discuss the pros and cons of different methods.
Requirements: Competence in rappelling; helmet, harness, adjustable self-protection tether, rappelling device that can be locked off (eg. Crittr), 4 locking carabiners. 2 standard ascender devices with appropriate runners and a VT Prusik You can borrow the Club ascenders and VT prussiks, but the other gear must be your own.
THIS OUTING IS OPEN TO THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER ASCENDED A ROPE.
Everyone goes on the waitlist. LIMIT OF 4 (not counting Luba and me) so please don’t sign up unless you’re SERIOUS about participating. No guests, pets, children. If there is a large demand, I’ll repeat outing again soon.
Social distancing and mask wearing will be REQUIRED due to very close quarters. Please don’t come if ill.
I’ve prepared a detailed syllabus which you MUST READ before participating. It’s posted on the LVMC website.
Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions may not appear. If not, please check back again to answer the questions.
