Illipah was named after the Illipah Mining District, which was named after a Native American term meaning “place of many springs.” The town quickly became a hub for mining activity, with several mines operating in the area. In the early 20th century, Illipah experienced a decline in mining activity, and by the 1930s, the town was all but abandoned.
