Mizpah Hotel History
Located in Tonopah, Nevada, the Mizpah Hotel was named after the Pazpah Mine and during its day was considered a social hotspot for wealthy investors and celebrities during the mining boom in Tonopah. At the time, it was considered of the first luxury hotels in the state and at five stories tall, the Mizpah and the nearby Belvada Building shared the title of the tallest building in Nevada up until 1927 when the Hotel Nevada beat it by one floor.
Timeline
- 1907 – Construction began at the cost of over $200,000 replacing the one-story Mizpah Saloon and Grill
- November 17, 1908 – The Mizpah Hotel opened and was heralded as “the finest stone hotel in the desert” by local newspapers
- July 7, 1978 – Added to the US National Register of Historic Places
- 1979 – The Mizpah changed hands several times through the years until Frank Scott of Las Vegas bought it
- 1999 – The hotel shuttered
- Early 2011 – The hotel was purchased by Fred and Nancy Cline of Cline Cellars, Sonoma, California,
- August 2011 – After renovations, the Mizpah Hotel was reopened to the public
