Strawberry was a mining district in White Pine County, Nevada.

It was originally known as Newark but was called Strawberry in later years.

Strawberry Nevada History

I have multiple mining reports to work through to make sure that we share information that is related to the Newark / Strawberry area.

The town was known for its 12,000-tree orchard and huge fields of strawberries.

Today, the area of Strawberry is mainly used as a ranching settlement. 

Timeline

  • October 1866 – Newark Mining District, also known as Strawberry, was discovered by Stephen and John Beard on the east slope of the Diamond Range, twenty-nine miles northeast of Eureka
  • 1867 – The Centenary Silver Company purchased the most essential workings in this little-known district and spent $180,000 to build a twenty-stamp amalgamation mill with furnaces that were imported from the Reese River area.
  • 1874 – About 200 men were working only for the miles to close a few years later after producing only $100,000 in silver
  • September 7, 1899 – The Strawberry post office opened
  • 1905 – Newark rewoke when production from old mines allowed limited shipments for a few years
  • November 30, 1938 – The Strawberry post office closed

From Nevada Geography Dictionary:

Strawberry (White Pine) is the name for a settlement east of Diamond Peak in the Diamon Range.

From Tingley:

Located on the east side of the Diamond Range, mainly on the lower eastern slopes of Newark Mountain in the vicinity of the Bay State Mine. The original district name was Newark, but Strawberry was used by Hill (1912).
