May 2021 Update: The Windstone Arch is no longer.
It either has fallen to nature or vandalism.
Windstone Arch at Valley of Fire
Photographers stand in line for a chance to shoot this red and orange sandstone arch, named Windstone Arch, located within a small cave less than three feet tall within the Valley of Fire State Park.
Windstone Arch at Valley of Fire Overview
Windstone Arch aka Fire Cave is an arch inside of a small cave located in the Valley of Fire State Park.
The best time to photograph Windstone Arch is in the early morning but unfortunately for me, when I have gone there to photograph Windstone Arch there is a crowd waiting for their turn. When I returned in the afternoon, there is nobody around waiting for their turn to crawl into the small cave to take their best shot.
The image of this cave and arch are featured on the cover of the 2003 book published by well-known landscape photographer David Muench Windstone: Natural Arches, Bridges, and Other Openings
The photos in this article were taken in the mid-afternoon in May 2019.
Windstone Arch at Valley of Fire Location
Even with the directions and coordinates, Windstone Arch inside of Fire Cave can be hard to find (unless that crowd of photographers is there waiting).
You may see people gathering at the first rock formation, this is not where the Windstone Arch is located. Keep walking behind that formation until you see another one as marked above with Google Maps and poke around until you find Fire Cave.
The arch can be found off approximately 150 feet off the road that goes through Arch Rock and Atlatl Rock campgrounds in Valley of Fire State Park.
After passing the Arch Rock campground on the paved part of Campground Road in Valley of Fire State Park, reset your odometer as you leave the paved road and drive 0.1 miles. At the point where this road makes its first bend to the right and starts to dip into a wash, pull off to the right side and stop.
I forgot to take a photo of the outside of the rock formation that houses the arch and will update the article once I take the photo for you to use as a reference to make it easier to find.
